The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will host the annual safety outreach effort, Stand Up for Grain Safety Week, from April 13-17.
The kick-off event will take place at the University of Nebraska Eastern Research and Extension Center near Lincoln, NE. This year’s theme is “Small Changes, Big Impact – Properly doing the little things can make a big difference.”
The event will focus on:
• Preventive maintenance.
• Machine/conveyor guarding.
• Grain bin entry.
• Slips, trips and falls – hazard assessment.
Partners. The Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Illinois-based Grain Handling Safety Coalition (GHSC) are partnering with NGFA and OSHA in the national outreach effort.
During the Stand-Up for Grain Safety Week, companies may participate by providing a focused activity and/or toolbox talk on any prevention measure.
What is a Safety Stand-Up?
A Safety Stand-Up is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to workers about safety. Any workplace can hold a stand-up by taking a break to focus on grain engulfment hazards and reinforcing the importance of grain bin safety.
Employers of companies not exposed to grain bin hazards can use this opportunity to have a conversation with workers about other identified job hazards they face, protective methods, and the company's safety policies and goals.
It also can be an opportunity for workers to talk to management and provide direct input about grain bin and other job hazards.
