GFAI Letter: Illinois Raises Truck Weight Limits to 90,000 Pounds as Part of COVID-19 Response

A letter from Jeffrey D. Adkisson, Executive Vice President, Grain and Feed Association of Illinois:

Members:

Yesterday (April 2) Governor Pritzker issued an update to the authorization allowing for an increase in weight on State Highways and Interstates to 90,000 pounds on 5 axles or an additional 12% above legal loads on fewer axles.

Previously, the weight limit had been increased to 88,000 pounds or 10% above legal weights. There has been confusion about what movements of grain products are eligible for the weight variance. Based on our conversations with state officials, nearly all grain movements can be transported at the heavier weights.

The one exception is grain movements which will be going onto a barge. The rationale is grain going on barges is being exported and the authorization calls for movements which support “…the transportation of emergency response/relief supplies for the COVID-19 pandemic…”

Please note, the Authorization only applies to State Highways and the Interstate system. In addition, it expires on April 30. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Jeffrey D. Adkisson,

CAE Executive Vice President

Grain and Feed Association of Illinois
