Dallas County, IA Fire Departments Receive Grain Bin Rescue Training

Dallas County, IA — With harvest getting underway, Iowa firefighters from Waukee, Van Meter, and De Soto participated in a grain rescue training program on Sept. 12, according to a Dallas County News report.

Professional Rescue Innovations, which provides technical rescue programs to fire departments across Iowa, and training officer Capt. Justin Fyfe, coordinated the program.

Along with the training, the day helped local fire departments that often work together get to know each other, their strengths and weaknesses.

The day began with a two-hour classroom session that covered all aspects of construction, components, rescue operations and more.

The remainder of the day included a hands-on portion with a grain bin rescue simulation in which a volunteer is put into grain up to their chest in a prop so a variety of rescue scenarios can be covered.

“We try and do this training as often as possible,” De Soto Fire Chief John Booth said. “Grain bin rescue isn’t just important during the harvest season but year round, especially when farmers, elevators and ethanol plants are unloading bins."
