Safety is a full-time responsibility year-round at grain handling facilities, but harvest season can be especially challenging.
Harvest brings increased traffic for receiving, seasonal and part-time employees, long hours, and equipment checks, all of which require training and adherence to established safety protocols by all employees.
John Lee, director of safety, health and environmental services for the Grain & Feed Association of Illinois, gave a presentation on Pre-Harvest Safety for the Grain Elevator and Processing Society Corn Belt Chapter during a recent meeting in Normal, IL.
He spoke with Grain Talk about his background in grain safety and safety training and discussed some of the steps grain handling facilities can be taking now to prepare for a safe harvest and some of the challenges that must be met.
